AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
As part of FernLeaf's rich learning environment we offer a variety of after school activities and sports taught by the FernLeaf team or outside organizations with additional expertise. These offerings change throughout the year and may be available after the initial enrollment period by communication with the instructor. The programs showing below are for our most recent session.
Lower school is our elementary students in grades K-4th and upper school comprises 5th grades through high school. Click the links below to see the offerings for those specific grade levels.

Music Exploration

Music Exploration is a vibrant after-school program designed for kindergarteners and first graders to dive into the world of music in a fun and engaging way. Students will have the chance to play a variety of musical games, explore different instruments, and learn exciting folk songs from around the world. This program encourages creativity, rhythm, and teamwork, all while fostering a love for music and movement in a joyful and supportive environment.

Betsy Dixon of Southside Dance and Hendersonville Ballet will offer two new classes at FernLeaf during the winter session. Classes will include fun music and creative movement, and focus on beginning ballet, jazz and modern techniques. No special shoes or equipment required. Students should wear comfortable, stretchy clothing for freedom of movement. At the end of the session, students will show off what they have learned in a mini recital in the classroom.
Betsy has been teaching dance classes for 20 years, 15 of them with Southside Dance and Hendersonville Ballet. She has taught ballet, tap, jazz and modern dance to ages 3 through 63. She choreographed an award-winning Bollywood jazz piece for Hendersonville Ballet to take to the Encore dance competition and Furman College. Currently she is choreographing and costuming for Hendersonville Ballet’s Nutcracker and Spring Performance.

OSEGA’s recreational gymnastics program is a great start for students, whether they have a dream of becoming a competitive gymnast, or just looking for an activity to improve fitness in a fun way. Coloring Book
Creators Club

Join the fun in the Coloring Book Creators Club! In this afterschool group, kids will design their own cool and creative coloring pages. When the club ends, we will choose our favorite drawings and combine them into an actual book. From animals and cartoon characters to fun designs and scenes, everyone can draw what they love! We’ll learn coloring skills, explore simple drawing tips, practice making bold lines, and put it all together into an awesome book to color and share with friends. If you like to draw and want to see your ideas come to life, this is the club for you!

Science Club is where students learn about and conduct experiments in biotechnology. Students will learn techniques to isolate, amplify, and identify segments of DNA and how these techniques are used in scientific investigations around the world and to further our understanding of life. We will also have scientist guest speakers join some of our sessions to talk about the work they do in the field of biotechnology.
High school students will act as mentors in this club. NOTE: students participating in this program will be held to the highest behavior and safety standards.

Girls Empowered!

The Addams Family

Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet, smart young man from a respectable family – a man her parents have never met. And if that wasn’t upsetting enough, Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother. Now, Gomez Addams must do something he’s never done before – keep a secret from his beloved wife. Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday’s “normal” boyfriend and his parents.
This musical production is open to students grades 5-11. Everyone who acts will also build, paint, cut, sew, and create. The Addams Family will be directed by Skyler Goff, a local playwright, actor, and director. Over the last 10 years he has worked with The Montford Moppets young adult theatre camp adapting scripts, and directing. He has also led after school programming involving theater, board game design, and zombie survival.

Orienteering

Become an Adventure Racer! Students will put their navigational skills, map reading, and fitness to the test as they participate in outdoor navigation races. Students will learn how to read a map and compass in concert and use this knowledge to locate checkpoints, all on a timer. Skillbuilding activities and courses will be on our Wilderness campus and use our orienteering map that is used in our annual Orienteering/Adventure race every spring!
