As part of FernLeaf's rich learning environment we offer a variety of after school activities and sports taught by the FernLeaf team or outside organizations with additional expertise. These offerings change throughout the year and may be available after the initial enrollment period by communication with the instructor. The programs showing below are for our most recent session.

Lower school is our elementary students in grades K-4th and upper school comprises 5th grades through high school. Click the links below to see the offerings for those specific grade levels.

Betsy Dixon of Southside Dance and Hendersonville Ballet will offer two new classes at FernLeaf during the spring session. Classes will include fun music and creative movement, and focus on beginning ballet, jazz and modern techniques. No special shoes or equipment required. Students should wear comfortable, stretchy clothing for freedom of movement. At the end of the session, students will show off what they have learned in a mini recital in the classroom.

 Betsy has been teaching dance classes for 20 years, 15 of them with Southside Dance and Hendersonville Ballet. She has taught ballet, tap, jazz and modern dance to ages 3 through 63. She choreographed an award-winning Bollywood jazz piece for Hendersonville Ballet to take to the Encore dance competition and Furman College. Currently she is choreographing and costuming for Hendersonville Ballet’s Nutcracker and Spring Performance.

OSEGA’s recreational gymnastics program is a great start for students, whether they have a dream of becoming a competitive gymnast, or just looking for an activity to improve fitness in a fun way. Our range of beginner to elite levels allow gymnasts to progress at their own pace on all 4 events: Vault, bar, beam & floor. OSEGA’s structured lesson plans are designed to teach core gymnastics skills and provide a fun, safe environment to explore personal strengths and goals.

In our spring ceramics class students will learn the basics of clay, shaping and how to use ceramics tools. We will make 10 distinct projects. This class includes all tools and materials, clay, and glazes. Hope to see you there.

Fairy Garden Club

We will work together to create garden playscapes centered on the theme of fairies and their woodland friends. Students will plan a miniature landscape with real plants and natural construction materials. Next we will learn to make permanent mini structures for the fairies to live in.  And before the fairies can move in we will learn to forage from nature useful items for the fairies to use while living in our garden. These playscapes will be available for students to play with when we are done.  Lastly, students will take all these skills and build their own micro landscape in an indoor pot to take home.

Stretch your minds and bodies at FernLeaf’s afternoon yoga club. Each class begins with a guided self check in and closes with a brief meditation in savasana. We will focus on our breathing techniques, yoga postures, and mindful movement. In this club students will be enhancing their coordination, strength, and flexibility as well as boosting their inner confidence and self regulation. Yoga poses are aimed at supporting each student's unique development. Every body holds different abilities and this class is designed to be adaptable and enjoyable for all students.

Basketball Club

This co-ed basketball club is open to all levels of experience. Students will learn the fundamentals of the sport while improving teamwork, coordination, character-building and endurance. All activities will take place at the FernLeaf Wilderness Campus Gym. The club will be a combination of skill building activities and games with an emphasis on developing a love of the sport.

Welcome adventurers, to Game Master Forge, the ultimate after-school haven for aspiring Game Masters (GMs) and Dungeon Masters (DMs) of all stripes! Whether you're a seasoned storyteller or just starting out, our club is the perfect place to hone your skills, share your passion, and embark on epic adventures with fellow roleplaying game enthusiasts.

 

In the Game Master Forge, you'll dive into the world of roleplaying games like Dungeons & Dragons, Alien, Vaesen, and other tabletop RPGs. Our club offers a dynamic and supportive environment where members can:

Get creative with world-building, plot development, and character creation. Design, create, and explore a map specifically for your own campaign. Test your campaigns, experiment with new game systems, and practice your GM skills in a friendly, low-pressure setting.

Esports are coming to FernLeaf! Join us as we partner with VESL to participate in statewide Esports and STEM competitions for NC high school students each semester. Many of the games in which students compete during the regular season are already being played at home and all the games are open to new players. Matches are played from home, at school, or even on the road at the state final in Greensboro. Regular season, one off tournaments, and STEM competitions offer match live streaming, specialized coaching, and prizes! Space is limited and team size depends on the specific game or activity. NOTE: 

Due to high anticipated demand, there will be Tryouts for the ESports team. Tryouts will be 2/4 from 3 to 4:15, all are welcome. Students joining the team will then have a fee added to the their MPP account.

Students on this team will be representing FernLeaf in the local Western North Carolina High School Disc Golf League (WNCHSDG) played at different courses in the area. Are you interested in how scientists conduct field work to collect data for wildlife? Do you love turtles and hiking off trail through the woods? Come join us as we work to collect data for the NC Box Turtle Connect Project. Our beautiful 93 acre WIlderness campus will be our study site as we trek through the woods in search of box turtles. During our time we will learn about box turtles, find out about their population, collect data for our state wide project on the turtles we locate, & learn how we can be good stewards for our local turtle populations.
