The FernLeaf Fundamentals: An example of how these play out in FernLeaf's classrooms everyday!

The FernLeaf Fundamentals are: high quality academics, creating rich learning environments, community & culture AND social emotional learning. Here is an example of teachers blending multiple fundamentals into ONE AMAZING PROJECT!

There are so many ways through which FernLeaf teachers seek to provide creative,

exciting and interactive learning opportunities for their students. We need to look no

further than our 6th grade science classes for a great example.

The 6th graders had the opportunity to participate in the National Geographic Explorer

Classroom, Wildlife Series. It was a perfect compliment to what students were learning

through their Box Turtle Project.

The Explorer Classroom connects students from around the world online via Zoom for a series of live, interactive lessons and Q&A on a variety of topics within the series. The National Explorer experts participating inspire students to become the next generation of explorers by sharing behind-the-scenes stories about their work and answering student questions in real time! The guiding mission is for students to be able to explore globally while working locally within their respective communities to find ways to protect wildlife living in their nearby habitats.

There were approximately 500 classrooms participating in the Wildlife Series and our

FernLeaf 6th graders were 1 out of about 50 classes selected to be on screen each week with the National Geographic Explorers! During one of the live sessions, one of our

students was selected to ask a question on screen. Students’ work was also submitted to

the Explorer team representing how they could act locally through a Take Action Project

outlining their plan to help protect the turtles on our campus.

Here is the reply from the Explorer team about their work:

"Thank you so much for submitting your students’ projects for Mission 4 of the Wildlife Series. We loved seeing your students’ ideas for making a difference for wildlife! We know the time was short to complete the activity to be considered for the live event on Thursday, and we very much appreciate your commitment to the series. The exciting news is that we would love to include your class in our final celebration event! We will be highlighting 1 or 2 of pieces of your students’ submissions as part of the live event. We would also like for you to select 1 or 2 of your students to speak on camera and share responses to the following questions."

Want to see our students on camera?! FernLeaf is highlighted with our students' work and the FernLeaf students speaking at 24:24!

What a great way to cap off the series and celebrate an amazing learning opportunity for

our very own FernLeaf Explorers!
