Emily Shaw

Emily has always had a deep appreciation for the environment. Growing up in Baltimore, Maryland she was fascinated by the outdoor world because of her proximity to the Appalachian Trail and the Chesapeake Bay. Emily attended UNC-Asheville for her undergraduate degree and absolutely fell in love with the mountains of western North Carolina. While there, she worked for Outdoor Programs leading canoeing, white water kayaking, and rock climbing trips for college students. Early on in her college career Emily developed a passion for education, acquiring her BA in History and Teaching License for grades 6 through 12. She has had experience working with students who have learning disabilities and special needs in both a paraeducator and camp counselor capacity. After graduation Emily became a wilderness field instructor, a canoe specialist in Wyoming, and taught three years at the middle school level – making sure to take her classes outside as much as possible. 

These experiences really helped to shape who she is today and fueled her desire to later attend graduate school. Emily recently graduated from North Carolina State University with a master’s degree in research for the Climate Change & Society Program. Having spent so much time enjoying the outdoors and teaching outside, she felt it was time for her to learn more on how to protect it. Emily is excited to integrate climate change information into the history curriculum and teach students how to become better researchers by mastering important reading and writing skills.

In her free time she likes to climb very big mountains, practice yoga, and hang out with her rescue pup, Salem.
